Paper I – Poetry

Section – A :
Answer any two of the following : 18 × 2 = 36
1. Bring out the thematic significance of the first 18 lines in the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales.
2. Shakespeare’s sonnet 116 announces “a definite step in the poet’s war against time”. Analyse the poem in the light of this statement.
3. Write a critical note on “The Pulley” as a religious poem.
4. Discuss how Satan is presented as a “fallen hero” in Paradise Lost (Book I). Answer with close reference to the text.

Section – B :
Answer any three of the following questions : 12 × 3 = 36
5. Discuss to what extent Spenser’s idealisation of the beauty of his beloved in Sonnet IX (“Longwhile I sought to what I might compare”) is Petrarchan. Answer with close reference to the text.

6. Write a short critical note on Dryden’s characterisation of Achitophel and Zimri in Absalom and Achitophel.
7. Comment an Blake’s vision of the city in the poem “London.”
8. Bring out the romantic elements in Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan”.

9. Do you agree with the view that Browning’s characterisation of Andrea Del Sarto moves between “sympathy and judgement” ?
10. Critically analyse Philip Larkin’s poem “The Whitsun Weddings”.

11. Locate and annotate any four of the following : 7 × 4 = 28
a) “Embrouded was he, as it were a meede, Al ful of fresshe floures, whyte and reede. Syngynge he was, or floytynge, al the day, He was as fressh as the month of May,”

b) “I have seen roses damasked, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks. And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.”

c) “There like a bird it sits, and sings, Then whets, and combs its silver wings; And, till prepared for longer flight, Waves in its plumes the various light.”

Paper II – Aspects of Language

Section – A :
1. Answer any two of the following : 18 × 2 = 36
a) Discuss the theories about the origin of language.
b) How are English consonant and vowel sounds described ? Give examples of three different types each of consonant and vowel sounds.

c) Distinguish between inflexional process and derivational process of word formation.
d) Distinguish between surface structure and deep structure according to Chomsky’s 1965 theory.

Section – B :
2. Answer any three of the following questions : 12 × 3 = 36
a) Explain the nature of English diphthongs and lateral consonants.
b) Discuss with examples the concept of IC analysis.

c) Write short notes on any three of the following : 4 × 3
i) Pidgin
ii) Class variation of Spoken English
iii) Cohesion
iv) Dialect mixing in English
v) Weak forms of English words.
d) Describe the English fricatives with examples.
e) Discuss the concept of Register with examples.

f) Give morphological analysis of any six of the following : 2 × 6
mathematical, women, sheep, illogicality, personified, bi-monthly, disability, nonsensical, purification.

Section – C :
3. Answer any four of the following questions : 7 × 4 = 28
a) Write a note on the global character of the English language.
b) Write a note on uses of English in India.
c) Distinguish between morph, morpheme and allomorph.
d) Write the phonemic transcription of the following words ( any seven ) : 1 × 7 college, button, judge, air, pleasure, clutch, pure, there, camera, balloon, poor, loud.

e) Write short notes on any two of the following : 3 2 1 × 2
Strong form, Diphthong, Alliteration, Metonymy.
f) Draw the tree diagrams to explain the ambiguity of any two of the following sentences : 3 12 × 2
i) Visiting relatives can be a nuisance.
ii) Flying kites can be dangerous.
iii) Old men and women are welcome.
iv) The mayor asked the police to stop drinking at midnight.

g) Attempt a stylistic analysis of the following :
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day ! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence :
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference.

h) Write brief notes on the following structures in IC analysis : 31 × 2
i) The structure of sub-ordination
ii) The structure of co-ordination.

Paper III – British Drama

Section – A :
1. Answer any two of the following : 18 × 2 = 36
a) Closely scrutinize the prologue to Volpone to explain Jonson’s theme, purpose and art. Does he succeed in these aims ?
b) What is the major theme of The Tempest ? With what success has the theme been presented in terms of drama ?
c) Show how The Rivals mirrors aspects of eighteenth century society.
d) Is the title Look Back in Anger justified ? Discuss with close reference to the text.

Section – B :
2. Answer any three of the following questions : 12 × 3 = 36
a) Comment on the significance of the gravedigger scene in Hamlet.
b) The Importance of Being Earnest is a mere farce with nothing else to its credit. Discuss.
c) Are the lengthy dialogues of Man and Superman undramatic ? Comment.

d) Sheridan’s characters are two-dimensional. Assess Bob Acres and Sir Lucius O’Trigger in the light of this statement.
e) Closely analyse the ‘Interlude’ in Murder in the Cathedral to indicate its importance in the play.
f) Since nothing happens in Waiting for Godot — no progress in time or space, can it be defined as drama ? Evaluate.

Section – C :
3. Answer any four of the following questions : 7 × 4 = 28
a) Compare and contrast the portrayals of Celia and Lady Would be in Volpone.
b) What is the function of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Hamlet ?
c) What purpose do song and music serve The Tempest ?
d) Why is Lydia Languish, ‘a lady of very singular taste’ ? Discuss, with suitable illustrations.

e) What light does the character of Octavius throw on Shaw’s ideas on love and sex ?
f) Is history modified at all in Eliot’s play Murder in the Cathedral ?
g) Do you think Lucky’s dance and speech offer any meaning or is it merely inconsequential ?
h) Jimmy mocks Alison for being “pusillanimous”. Is his assessment correct ? Justify your point of view.
