1. Answer any five of the following (limit your answer in 50 words). (3×5=15)
a) Determinate the speed of flight of a clock which appears to loose 2 minutes every hour.

b) What happen to the ring system when the Newton’s ring apparatus is immersed in a liquid of refractive index µ-

d) Determine the minimum number of lines in a grating which just resolve in the second order with wavelength of sodium lines 5890Å and 5896 Å.
e) Calculate the percentage contraction in the length of a rod in the frame of reference moving with velocity 0.8c in the direction.

f) i) Parallel to its length and ii) at an angle 30° with its length.
g) What is Double refraction- Define ordinary and extra-ordinary ray.
h) How Hysteresis curve can be used to select material for construction
i) What is Pointing vector and what does it signify-

2.a) Derive Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence relation. (9)
b) Calculate the speed at which mass of a body becomes double of its rest mass. (3)
3. Derive Maxwell’s equations in different form. (12)

4. What is Compton’s Shift- Show that the change in wavelength of photon is given by (1 cos ) /( ) 0 = h – m c w where m0 is the rest mass ofelectron. (12)
5. Describe the construction and theory of plane transmission grating and explain the spectrum formation by it. (12)

6. Describe the construction and working of nicol prism. How it can be used as an analyzer and polarizer- (12)
7. What is spontaneous and stimulated emission- Explain Ruby laser.
8. What are Newton’s rings- Explain how it can be used to determine the wavelength of light. (12)

a) What are semiconductors?
b) Explain the formation of n-type extrinsic semiconductor.
c) Explain Rayleigh criterion of resolution.

d) Distinguish between interference and diffraction fringes.
e) What is optical activity?
f) What do you understand by laser?

g) What do you mean by attenuation in optical fibre?
h) State Ampere’s law.

2. Deduce an expression for electrical conductivity in terms of electron and hole mebilities in an extrinsic semiconductor. (10)
3. a) State and explain the conditions for interference of light. (5)
b) In a Newton’s ring experiment the diameter of 4th and 12th rings are 0.400 cm and 0.700 cm respectively. Deduce the diameter of 20th dark ring. (5)

4. a) Derive an expression for the resolving power of telescope. Explain the need of large aperture for telescope used for astronomical purposes. (5)
b) A plane transmission grating has 40,000 lines and the grating element is 12.5 x 10-7 cm. Calculate maximum resolving power, if it is used in the range of wavelength 5000Ǻ. (5)

5. What is Nicol’s prism? Describe its construction and explain how it can be used to produce plane polarized light. (10)
6. Draw a neat diagram of He-Ne laser. Describe its method of working. What are characteristics of laser beam? Discuss its important applications. (10)

7. Explain acceptance angle and acceptance cone of an optical fibre. What do you mean by numerical aperture? Derive expressions for them. (10)
8. Write down Maxwell’s equations and deduce velocity of propagation of plane electromagnetic waves in a medium of dielectric constant and permeability µ.
