a) Differentiate between real fluid and ideal fluids.
b) Explain in brief : density and surface tension.

e) Define Zeroth law of thermodynamics.

a) What is the difference between Plasticity and Elasticity? Briefly explain.
b) Write a short note on the principle of hot working.
c) Write the advantages and disadvantages of forging.

d) What do you understand by presswork?
e) What is welding? Define weldability. Also write the advantages of welding.
f) How is an arc is generated in arc welding?
g) What are the differences between spot welding and seam welding?
h) List out the destructive and non destructive methods for testing of welds? Explain magnetic particles testing.

2. Why cost is estimation of welds done? List out the different types of costs that are required to calculate the total welding cost? (9)
3. Discuss the resistance spot welding with the help of neat sketch? Compare it with seam welding? (9)

4. Describe the ‘Gamma Ray’ and ‘Dye-Penetrant’non-destructive tests in detail. Also write down the applications of non-destructive tests. (9)
5. Explain submerged arc welding with neat sketch. (9)
6. Explain the comparison between hot working and cold working. (9)

7. Show the components of a die-set with the help of a diagram. Differentiate between blanking and punching with the help of diagram. (9)
8. What are different methods of forging? (9)

a) Write down the principle operation of three phase induction motor.
b) Explain the V- curves and application of synchronous motor.
c) Why single phase induction motor not self starting explain with the help of double revolving field theory.

d) What are electrical drives and gives their advantages?
e) Compare between three phase synchronous and three phase induction motor.
f) A three phase, 4 poles, 50Hz induction motor runs at 1460rpm. Determine its percentage slip.
g) Explain the principle operation of single phase servomotor.
h) Derive the torque equation of electric drives.

2. Why starters are necessary for starting induction motor? Name different starting method for three phase induction motor and also explain any two method of starting. (9)
3. Explain hunting of synchronous machine. What is purpose of damper winding in a synchronous machine? (9)

4. A universal series motor has a resistance of 30 ohm and inductance of 0.5H. When connected to a 250V dc supply and loaded to take 0.8A its runs at 2000rpm. Determine speed, torque and power factor when connected to a 250V, 50Hz ac supply and loaded to take the same current. (9)

5. Explain the principle operation of multi quadrant drives. And also draw the components of load torque. (9)
6. Discuss how synchronous motor can function as a synchronous capacitor. (9)
7. Write the short notes on the following : (i) Resistance motor (ii) capacitor motor (iii) shaded pole motor. (9)

8. A three phase, 4-pole induction motor is supplied from three phase, 50Hz ac supply calculate: (i) the synchronous speed (ii) the rotor speed when slip is 4%. (iii)the rotor frequency when rotor runs at 600 rpm. (9)
