Instructions

(1) The question paper has been divided into three parts, A, B and C. The number of questions to be attempted and their marks are indicated in each part.

(2) Answers of all the questions of each part should be written continuously in the answer sheet and should not be mixed with other parts’ Answer. In the event of answer found, which are belongs to other part, such answers will not be assessed by examiner.

(3) The candidate should write the answer within the limit of words prescribed in the parts A, B and C.
(4) If there is any difference in English language question and its Gujarati Translation, then English language question will be considered as valid.

(5) Answer should be written in one of the two languages. Write in the language (English or Gujarati) preference given by you. Answer should not be written in both the languages in the same paper.

Part – A

1. What is the evolutionary significance of heterospory among plants ?

2. Write the names of the angiosperm families based on the given characters :
(i) Monadelphous stamens,
(ii) Flowers containing vexillary aestivation having keel, wings and standard,
(iii) Inflorescence containing ray and disc florets,
(iv) Trimerous flowers containing perianth and superior ovary.

3. What are the products of first fusion and second fusion in double fertilization of plants ?
4. Explain the significance of sexual reproduction over vegetative reproduction in evolution.

5. Give scientific names of the medicinal plants, which are locally known as :
(i) Kalmegh,
(ii) Ashwagandha,
(iii) Prishnaparni and
(iv) Guggal

6. Give scientific names of the plants which yield fibres known as :
(i) Sisal,
(ii) Manila Hemp,
(iii) Sun Hemp and
(iv) Flax

7. Explain covalent and ionic bonds. Mention the difference between two.
8. What are isoenzymes ? Give any two examples.
9. Give differences between components of plant, fungus and bacterial cell wall.
10. What is cytoskeleton ? What is its function ?

11. What is Backcross in plants ?
12. What is an Allele ?
13. What is photorespiration ? Name the cell organelles involved in photorespiration.
14. What is Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) in plants ? Explain the role of salicyclic acid in SAR.
15. How the synthetic seeds are produced ? Mention their advantage over the zygotic seeds.

17. Define and explain the correlation coefficient and its types.
18. Explain the concept of endemism and its importance.

Part – B

(1) Question No. 21 to 32.
(2) Attempt all 12 questions.
(3) Each question carries 5 marks.
(4) Answer should be given approximately in 50 to 60 words.

21. Explain the system of “binomial nomenclature” with suitable example in plant taxonomy.
22. Describe two reproductive features of gymnosperms which distinguish them from angiosperms.

23. How do Successive and Simultaneous types of wall formation differ after meiosis in pollen mother cells ?
24. What is the causal organism of Ergot disease of wheat ? How do we recognize an ergot disease ?

25. Name the monomers and type of bonds which join them to form Maltose, Sucrose and Lactose. Which one is the most stable and resistant to modification and breakdown ?
26. Name and briefly describe the different sub-stages of Prophase-I of first meiotic division in light with behaviour of chromosomes.

27. In one sentence for each, describe the function of
(i) DNA gyrase
(ii) DNA helicase
(iii) DNA ligase
(iv) DNA primase and
(v) DNA topoisomerase

28. Comment on the pattern of inheritance displayed by traits with continuous variation. Plant height displays a range of phenotypes varying from 15 cm to 95 cm. Calculate the contribution of the additive alleles and determine the height of plants with the genotypes AaBb, AaBB, and aaBB respectively.

29. Describe briefly the method of protoplast fusion, its application and advantages.
30. Give a brief account of steps involved in DNA fingerprinting and its practical application.
31. Explain the important stages of Hydrarch succession.

32. Plant extract shows five compounds on TLC separation. The distance of compound from loading point are (i) 19 mm, (ii) 22 mm, (iii) 35 mm, (iv) 42 mm and (v) 52 mm respectively. Out of which Rf value of standard compound is 0.65. Distance from sample loading to solvent front is 80 mm. Calculate the Rf values of each compound and identify the standard compound.

Part – C

Instructions :
(1) Question No. 33 to 39.
(2) Attempt any 5 out of 7 questions.
(3) Each question carries 20 marks.
(4) Answer should be given approximately in 200 words.

33. Describe the different modes of asexual reproduction in plant kingdom and give suitable examples for each mode.

34. Explain the ß oxidation of fatty acids in mitochondria and add a note on the common pathway of complete oxidation of carbohydrates and fatty acids in to CO2 and generation of ATP.
35. Write a brief note on agro-climatic zones, diversity of eco-systems and types of forests found in the State of Gujarat.

36. Explain the CO2 fixation mechanism in C4 plants and enumerate the advantages of C4 mechanism over C3.
37. Discuss the different methods of gene transfer techniques for producing transgenic crops.
38. Discuss phosphorous cycling in ecosystem and highlight its biological importance.

39. What are the principles and applications of bright-field, dark-field and phase contrast microscopes ? Name two additional components that are required to convert bright-field microscope into a phase contrast microscope.
