Candidate have to attempt five questions, selecting one question from each unit, All questions carry equal marks.
UNIT-I
1. Present a life-sketch of Emile Durkheim and prepare the list of his major contributions.
2. Discuss the development of Sociology in Europe with its brief historical description.

UNIT-II
3. What is the image of society according to Karl Marx-
4. Define Alienation, and discuss the causes and consequences of labour alienation.

UNIT-III
5. What is Authority- Explain the salient features of rational legal authority.
6. Analyse the Weber’s concept of Social Action and its types.

UNIT-IV
7. Explain the concepts of Collective conscience and Collective representation.
8. Define Mechanical Solidarity, and discuss its characteristics.

UNIT-IV
9. Explain the nature and significance of the Marxian School in Indian Sociology.
10.Write notes on any two :
(a) Indology(b) Radha Kamal Mukherjee’s view on Social Values.
(c) D.P. Mukherjee’s contribution to Indian Sociology.

** Auguste Comte: Positivism; Herbert Spencer: Social Evolution ; Emile Durkheim : Social Fact; MaxWeber: Ideal Type.
UNIT – C :
The Classical Tradition:
** Durkheim: Division of Labour and Suicide; Weber : Social Action, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism; Pareto : Logical and Non-Logical Action, Circulation of Elites.

UNIT – D
:
Theoretical Approaches: Social Action : T. Parsons.
Functionalisms: R.K.Merton ; Conflict: Karl Marx.

UNIT – E
:
Development of Sociological Thought in India: Contributions of G.S. Ghurye, D.P. Mukherjee and Radha Kamal Mukherjee.

Pedagogy :
The focus of this paper is on the substantive, theoretical and methodological issues which shaped the thinking of pioneering and classical sociologists and which continue to concern the practitioners of sociology today.

Unless otherwise necessary to understand their contributions, the biographical details of the sociologists should be kept to the minimum.

Evaluation of the relevance and significance of the contributions of the pioneers and classical theorists should be briefed by the historical context of the discipline and its theorists.
