Part A :
Answer all questions. :
Each question carries 3 marks. :
1) Explain stress strain relation.
2) What are the assumptions in plasticity ?
3) Distinguish between forging and drawing.
4) What are the extrusion defects ?
5) How presses can be classified in sheet metal working. (5×3 = 15 marks)

Part B :
Answer all questions. :
Each question carries 5 marks. :
6) Write the steps involved in drawing a Mohr’s circle.
7) Define Von-mises yield criteria.
8) List the forging defects.
9) State the condition for biting of strip by rolls.
10) What are the formability tests for sheet metal ? (5×5 = 25 marks)

Part C :
Answer all questions. :
Each question carries 12 marks. :
11) The state of stress at a point in a strained material is as shown in figure. Determine
i. The direction of principal planes.
ii. The magnitude of principal stresses and
iii. The magnitude of the maximum shear stress and its direction. Indicate all the above planes by a sketch.

12) Derive the expression for principal stresses of an element subjected to general 2D stress system.

13) How geometrically represent Trecasa and Von-mises yield criteria? Sketch it.

14) Explain slip line field theory also write the assumption in plasticity.

15) Derive the expression for forging force of a rectangular plate under plane strain condition.
OR
16) Explain the drawing of solid rods through conical die.

17) With the help of a neat sketch explain the deformation zone in rolling. Also discuss about rolling defects.

18) Find the extrusion force in the plane extrusion of a rectangular blank.

Syllabus :
PE 010 704 Theory of Metal Forming
Objectives :
To describe the basic principles of metal forming and to provide a comprehensive coverage of various metal forming techniques

Module 1 : (12 hours)
Theory of deformation: Theory of stress: – components of stress tensor, principal areas and stresses, maximum shear stress, two dimensional stress systems, Mohr’s circle for plane stress, problems. Theory of strain: – strain components, strain rate, stress strain relation.

Module 2 : (12 hours)
Basic theory of plasticity : – Assumptions in plasticity, flow conditions, Von-Mises yield criteria, geometrical representation of Tresca and Von-Mises yield criteria, Levy von Mises stress strain rate law. Slip line field theory, upper and lower bound theorems.

Module 3 : (12 hours)
Theory of metal forming process :  Forging:  forging of a rectangular plate under conditions of plane strain and upper bound approach, forging of a solid disc on free body equilibrium and upper bound approaches, annulus disc upper bound approach, forging defects.

Drawing
: Drawing of solid rods through conical die, drawing of solid circular rod by upper bound approach, drawing of pipes over floating mandrel and wire drawing.

Module 4 : (12 hours)
Extrusion : Extrusion force in the plane extrusion of a rectangular blank, hydrostatic extrusion analysis, analysis of sinking of a thin walled tube, extrusion defects.

Rolling : – Deformation zone in rolling, conditions for biting of strip by rolls, equilibrium approach to rolling, drawing with stationary dies, rolling defects.

Module 5 : (12 Hours)
Sheet Metal Working : classification of presses and press tool operations -working principle, description, operation and applications of simple, compound, combination and progressive press tools – formability tests for sheet metals, erichsen and fukui tests, forming limit diagrams and shape analysis concepts
