Answer all questions
Each question carries 2 marks
1. Define non-destructive testing.
2. What are the properties of a good penetrant?
3 Write a note on the importance of Eye in Visual testing?

4. What is the equation for sound waves in a material?
5. What are penetrametres in radiographic testing? Mention its uses.
6. Explain Pulse Echo Testing technique.

7. Explain standard depth of penetration in Eddy current testing and its variation with frequency?
8. Name the materials which can be tested by magnetic particle testing?

9. Define any 2 testing methods for leak detection in pipelines?
10. What is the basic principle of acoustic emission test?

Part B :
(Answer any one question out of the two from each module. Each question carries 20 marks.)
Module I :
11. Compare destructive and non-destructive testing. Describe various visual Inspection methods and tools used for non destructive testing.

12. Explain the sequence of operation of Liquid penetrant testing. Differenciate fluorescent and visible dye penetrant.

Module II :
13 Describe the film processing, interpretation and evaluation of test results in Radiography testing method. Compare film radiography and real time radiography

14 Name and explain the types of probes used in Ultrasonic testing . Impact of Piezoelectric Transducers in Ultrasonic Testing? Mention the advantages and limitations of Ultrasonic inspection

15 Explain demagnetization in Magnetic particle testing? How do you ensure it? Portable Equipments used in MPT?

16 Explain the principle of Eddy current testing, benefits and applications.

Module IV :
17 Explain thermography techniques. Mention some applications in NDT.

2. Write notes on quality assurance.
3. What do you mean by process is in statistical control ?

4. List out the advantages of control chart for attributes over those for variables.
5. Differentiate between a p chart and c chart.
6. What is acceptance sampling? why it is used in practice ?

7. What is meant by rectifying inspection ?
8. Explain the advantages of standard sampling plans.
9. Distinguish between fault tree analysis and event tree analysis.
10. What is DPMO ? Explain. (2X10)

PART B :
Answer any one full question from each module.Each full question carries twenty marks
Module I :
11. a) Discuss the contributions of W.Edward Deming for assuring continuous quality improvements.
b) Describe the various quality costs.
12. a) Discuss the role of Quality Engineering in product design.
b) Explain Taguchi’s Loss function for the situation target is the best

Module II :
13. a) Explain the importance of Normal curve in sampling theory.
b) A sub group of 5 items each are taken from a manufacturing process at a regular interval. A certain quality characteristic is measured and X bar and R values computed. After 25 subgroups it is found that X bar = 357.5 and R = 8.8.

If the specification limits are 14.40 ± 0.40; and if the process is in statistical control, what conclusions can you draw about the ability of the process to produce items within specifications?
