Group-A  :

Group-B :
5. Examine the characteristics of the Metaphysical school of poetry.

8. Discuss the state of drama during the Restoration period.

Group-C :
9. Trace the origin and development of Novel in English Literature.
10. Comment on the popularity of the periodical essay in the eighteenth century England.
11. Estimate Dr. Johnson as a pioneer in many respects in English literature.
12. Attempt an essay on the revival of romanticism in English literature.

Group-D :
13. Discuss Wordsworth’s theory of poetry.
14. Appreciate the contribution of the younger Romantic Poets to English literature.

16. Discuss the impact of the World Wars on the twentieth century English literature.

PART-III :
I. Annotate any FIVE of the following passages, choosing atleast TWO from each section. (5 * 4=20)

GROUP-A

1. Am I a king and must be overruled? Brother, display my ensigns in the field; I’ll bandy with the barons and the earls, And either die or live with Gaveston.

2. And could my Crown’s revenue bringhim back I would freely give it to his enemies, And think I gained, having bought so dear a friend.
3. Commit not to my youth things of more weight Than fits a prince so young as I to bear, And fear not Lord and Father;

4. In heaven we may, in earth never shall we meet, And Leicester say, what shall become of us?
5. The proud corrupters of the light brained king Have done their homage to the lofty gallows, And he himself lies in captivity .

GROUP-B

6. Noble!-heroic ! But g’m not saved yet. This particular rush will soon pass through; but the pursuit will go on all night by fits and starts. I must take my chance to get off during a quiet interval.
7. You are my enemy; and you are at my mercy. What would I do if I were a professional soldier ?

8. Which of the six is the real man?-that’s the question that torments me. One of them is a hero, another a buffoon, another a humbug, another perhaps a bit of a background. And one, atleast, is a Coward- jealous, like all cowards.

9. Can you understand what it is to me to deceive him? I want to be quite perfect with Sergius-no meanness, no smallness, no deceit. My relation to him is the one really beautiful and noble part of my life.

10. If you are incapable of gratitude you are incapable of any noble sentiment. Even animals are grateful.

14. Discuss Arms and the Man as Shaw’s criticism of the modern civilization.
15. Comment of the relevance of the title “Arms and the Man” to the theme of the play.
16. Examine the role of Louka in Arms and the Man.

IV. Answer any TWO of the following : (2*20=40)
17. a) Examine Galsworthy as a social critic with reference to Strife.
(OR)
b) Analyse the character of John Anthony in Strife

18. a) Highlight the elements of humour in The Rivals.
(OR)
b) Discuss how far The Rivals reflects the contemporary social life.

19. a) Draw a character –sketch of Millament in The way of the World.
(OR)
b) Examine The Way of the World as a comedy of Manners.
